Evelyn Siu (Cohort 1) is a data scientist at Garner Health whose mission is to help patients find high-quality, affordable physicians, with the ultimate goal of driving the healthcare system to value this optimization – just like any other purchasing decision made. Healthcare is a complex landscape for patients to navigate, and while healthcare costs in the US are much higher than in other nations, healthcare outcomes in the United States are not proportionally better. Through her work at Garner, Evelyn uses her healthcare background and newly acquired data science skills to build novel models that help understand physician practice patterns throughout the US.
Reflecting on her time as a Samvid Scholar, she was left with the impression that she is not alone. It solidified for her that many talented people are trying to drive positive change for society, and through Samvid she’s been able to build a strong network of people who she can turn to for advice or help. She’d give two pieces of advice to her fellow Scholars: driving change isn’t always easy, so having a strong network is important and change can be slow and incremental, but every little piece is critical to making a larger difference.
This upcoming year Evelyn wants to focus on sustainability. She has realized that it can be easy to become frustrated or burnt out when working on tough problems but building a balanced, sustainable approach to work will be important to keep doing meaningful work.
